In writing we have been learning about poetry. Here are a few of mine:

Surf Beach 

Surfers battling for a wave 

My mum is telling my brother and me to behave 

The sand, so hot, so crisp, is burning the soles of my feet  

My mum finally lets us have a treat

He hit the ball so very high 

   It went so high it touched the sky

   He hit the ball so very high 

   It didn’t come down, he started to cry

Speech Finals

On Wednesday the school had speech finals. Every year group had three people that had great speeches. I was in the year six one. My speech topic was we are perfect the way we are. Here are a few photos of the people from room six that got into the finals.

Mixed Media Hands

 You hold the future in your hands. 

In Term 2 our Visual Arts focused was on Mixed Media. We finally finished our pieces of art at the end of the term. We started off by creating two hands, most of us copied our own hands as templates.  One hand represents our past and the other hand our future. We used lots of different materials and symbols to make our artwork as well as exploring a range of different techniques with watercolor paint. This is my art work.

Hockey

On Friday we had so much fun with Sport NZ as they came in to teach us hockey.  We got to do warm up and drills with the hockey sticks and played against each other in teams.  We are already looking forward to next Friday’s session. Here are a couple of pictures:

St Mary Mackillop Feast Day

Another celebration for Good Shepherd School in Week 3 was the Feast Day of Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop.  St Mary MacKillop a vital part of Good Shepherd School, this is because she was the founder of the Josephites aka the Brown Joes.  The Brown Joes travelled all over Australia and New Zealand helping the poor and those in need. They built schools and that is how we are all students at Good Shepherd School. We celebrated the Feast day by going to a Mass for St Mary of the Cross and also having fun with our buddy class Room 4 as we worked on a St Mary MacKillop Art project.

Prayers

On Monday the 5th of August Room 6 hosted whole school prayers. Our theme was The Gift of Faith. We did a song called ‘Open the Eyes of My Heart’ and Jiwoo, Zara and Maggie made hand actions for us. There were also people who did the prayers of the faithful. Overall prayers was a big success and everyone enjoyed it.

Assembly

Last week Room 6 performed their assembly. Our main entertainment was a drama circle on occupations. We also displayed our mixed media we made in term 2. Some people also shared about what they put on their art and why. We all had so much fun preparing and presenting our assembly.

Cook Island Week

Week 3 has been a very busy week with so many celebrations. Good Shepherd School celebrates our multicultural school with our Cook Island Language focus. We looked at the culture through our reading and made fun fact files. We were also lucky to have Alessandra and the cultural leaders teach us a Pure (prayer) to sing. We learnt Aro’a mai te Atua iaku.

How the Water Cycle Works

I am learning to inform my audience through an explanation.

When you take a shower, drink some water or water your plants, have you ever thought about where that water comes from? That water may have come from a cloud, a snowflake or maybe even the ocean. The way that water gets to your tap is because of a process called the water cycle. Did you know that 97% of earth’s water is salt and the other 3% is fresh water but unfortunately only 1% of that water is drinkable as the rest is in ice caps. A cycle is a series of steps that repeat over and over again. There are three main stages of the water cycle is precipitation, evaporation and condensation, starting off with precipitation.

Precipitation is when water droplets fall out of the sky and it can be seen as rain, snow or hail. Rain that falls directly onto rivers is called streamflow. Rain that falls onto land is called surface runoff. Infiltration is when the ground soaks in the water that falls onto it. All the water that has come from mountains will end up in a lake or river. The other water on footpaths or a road for example, will just end up in a puddle. When the sun starts coming out that is when the water will start to add heat causing evaporation, which leads to the next stage in the cycle.

Evaporation is the process where water changes into a gas or vapor by the heat of the sun. Water vapor is actually invisible so if you think it is that thing that comes out of your kettle, it is not, that is steam. The amount of evaporation depends on the temperature and how much water there is to evaporate. That water vapor will start to go high into the sky and then it will all start to condense together and that is when the next stage comes which is condensation.

Condensation is when water vapor gets cool and becomes visible water vapor which results in clouds. Condensation happens when the warm air cools down and the water vapour in the warm air condenses and turns into liquid. This is what happens in clouds. The higher in the sky the water vapor goes the colder it gets. Wind moves clouds into colder air and the water droplets in them merge which means they grow bigger and heavier until they are so heavy that they fall again as snow or hail. So now we are back to the beginning of the cycle.

The water cycle is an interesting process that happens everyday and everywhere. Precipitation is when water falls out of the sky, evaporation is when it turns into a vapor and lastly condensation when the water vapor gets cool and turns back into a cloud. The same amount of water that was on earth millions of years ago is the same now because all this water has been recycled. What a cool adventure this water has been through just to get to your tap. Think about that the next time you take a drink of water.

G.S.S Book Week 2019

Room 6 was hungry for books during our book week. We had a whole week celebrating all things books. We had author visits from Stu Duval and James Russell. Stu presented workshops on storytelling, cartooning and writing. James shared his books and told us stories. We did lots of cool book week activities in class like making dust jacket covers, wanted posters, bookmarks and story cubes. Finally our favourite day arrived, Friday. We got to dress up as our favourite characters and partake in the literacy treasure hunt. Overall book week is a fantastic week every year. Room 6 LOVES BOOK WEEK!

Watercare

Water, water everywhere! On Friday of week 6, we were lucky to have Sally from Watercare come to teach us more about the water. We did a drama activity and experiments. Firstly we examined the process that water goes through to become drinkable water in our households. Our drama was based on the process that the water goes through to be cleaned. We were the water going through each stage. We had so much fun as we ventured around the school. Once we learnt how water is cleaned we then had to try and clean the dirty water ourselves. We had to create a filter system in partners. We had to do four different tests for our experiments. We experimented with a range of filters to try and test which filter system was the best.

Pink Shirt Day

This week is bully free week. On Friday we had pink shirt day. This is to prevent bullying. Here is my outfit:

Sign Language Week

This week was sign language. On Thursday a lady came in a taught us how to do the national anthem in sign language. There was an interpreter there and had to translate English to sign language, sign language to English. This was really fun. I hope we learn some more about it.

The Season of Easter

In R.E we are learning about Easter. We have presented our learning by making a pinwheel. Each time you spin it it shows different drawings. Here is a picture of it.

In R.E we made Holy Spirit triangles. On each side it said faith, hope or love. Here is mine.

Sunsmart Posters

In class we have been learning about how we can be sunsmart. We have displayed our work as a poster. Here are a few facts on how to be sunsmart: you need to put on about one teaspoon of sunscreen on your arms and your legs and you only need about half a teaspoon on your face.
